  • Our staff, students, parents, and community will work together as a team to make our school safe and welcoming for everyone.

Safe and Inclusive School planEnsuring Positive Learning Environments

This year our SISP Team will focus on promoting Safe Learning Environments for all Byron Southwood students. We will continue to present information about equity and inclusion with a specific focus on a clear definition of Anti-Racism, Racial and other Slurs and Epithets. As well, we will focus on the harmful impact of put downs, gossip, and rumours on students. Examples of discriminatory behaviour, gossip, and rumours, and appropriate responses to this behaviour, will be provided for staff and students. School-wide activities will be planned to foster acceptance, awareness, and Safety at Byron Southwood Public School. Students will be encouraged to recognize and respect human rights.

Throughout the year we will:

  1. Develop a Non-Use of Racial and other Slurs and Epithets presentation for staff and students that highlights the Essential Conditions for Learning and Universal Ways to Address Concern. Our presentation will also include information about the harmful impact of put downs, gossip, and rumours on students.
  2. Encourage educators to create Safe Learning Environments for all students, where students feel free to express their ideas, values, and needs with others. Members of the SISP team will visit classes to read a book from our library to celebrate diversity and the importance of being kind to others.
  3. Provide strategies for students to appropriately respond to discriminatory language, put downs, gossip, and rumours and encourage respectful language within our school community.
